Effective STEM Messaging to Engage All Kids in STEM

To change the demographics of engineers and scientists - to increase the diversity of those pursing science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) fields - the conversation must change.

Explore research-based best practices and effective messaging, marketing and media that engage girls (and all learners) in STEM education and excite them about the possibilities of STEM careers. Learn how “create” is more effective than “build”, why images that include people and not just gadgets are important to engage all in STEM, and where to find best practices. Walk away with resources, research, and practical applications for the classroom and beyond.

  1. Participants will know the basic research findings from the Changing the Conversation: Messages for Improving Public Understanding of Engineering report from the National Academy of Engineering and other related messaging and imagery research.
  2. Participants will know words and images to use to engage a more diverse population of students to consider STEM careers.
  3. Participants will know basic recommendations on how to engage girls in STEM pursuits and encourage girls to consider STEM careers from the American Association of University Women (AAUW)’s Why So Few: Women in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math report.
  4. Participants will explore five strategies for engaging kids in STEM that will help kids gain the experiences and confidence to succeed in the classroom and beyond.
